The Nigerian Senate on Monday confirmed the nomination of Dr. Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC).
Also confirmed were Hon. Kigbu Joseph Haruna (Nasarawa State) and Tonga Betara Bularafa (Yobe State) as National Commissioners of the NPC.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier transmitted the names of the three nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population during plenary. The report was presented by the Committee Chairman, Senator Victor Umeh (LP – Anambra Central).
Senator Umeh noted that all three nominees were found “fit and proper” for the roles assigned to them, and he urged the Senate to confirm their appointments.
The Senate gave its approval through a voice vote, following overwhelming support from the lawmakers.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the committee for the prompt screening process and expressed confidence in the appointees.
“Population census is a very dicey thing; it helps in all facets of planning. May they succeed where others failed. I congratulate the President for selecting people of integrity for key positions,” Akpabio said.
The National Population Commission plays a critical role in data collection, demographic analysis, and national planning, especially ahead of the much-anticipated population and housing census.
