Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from his position, marking a significant shift in the leadership of the country’s power sector.

In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, Adelabu announced that he will step down effective April 30, 2026, to focus fully on his governorship ambition in Oyo State.

The decision comes just weeks after the minister publicly denied reports suggesting he planned to leave office, fueling fresh debate over the conflicting narratives.

In the letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Adelabu expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve, describing his appointment as a rare privilege.

He noted that stepping down ahead of time would allow for a smooth transition in the ministry while he redirects his attention to his long-standing political ambition, an aspiration he said dates back to 2016 during his tenure at the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Adelabu’s earlier denial of similar resignation reports, which were dismissed by his media team as false, has now raised questions about whether the initial claims were strategic or if recent political developments influenced his final decision.
