Ugandan police have launched an investigation into the death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who reportedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala on Monday morning.
Lawal, 29, was a striker for Ugandan Premier League club Vipers SC. According to police, he had been visiting a Tanzanian friend staying in one of the mall’s residential apartments before the fatal fall.
“The friend told police she had left him alone shortly before the incident,” authorities stated, adding that CCTV footage is being reviewed, and witnesses are being questioned to determine the exact circumstances of his death.
Vipers SC expressed their grief in a statement, calling Lawal’s passing “sudden and untimely.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the club said.
Lawal joined Vipers SC in July 2022 after playing for Rwandan side AS Kigali. His body has been taken to a medical facility for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
