The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has announced scholarships, automatic employment, housing and other support packages for children and caregivers in orphanages and charity homes across the state to mark his 62nd birthday.

The governor made the announcement on Friday during a celebration held at Divine Children’s Home in Atan Offot, Uyo. According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, the gesture was aimed at uplifting the less privileged and reinforcing the message that background should not limit one’s future.

Eno said his administration had consistently used his birthday to reach out to vulnerable groups, adding that the initiative reflects his commitment to compassion and inclusive governance. He noted that beyond infrastructure projects, fostering unity, peace and social welfare remained his greatest achievement.

Addressing the children, the governor assured them of a brighter future, stressing that every child has purpose and deserves the opportunity to succeed. He urged them to remain hopeful and resilient despite their circumstances.

As part of the interventions, the governor directed the Head of Civil Service, Mrs Elsie Peters, to offer automatic employment to 22 caregivers who had served as volunteers, as well as four other eligible individuals. He also approved further vocational training for 15 beneficiaries at the Ibom Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development Centre and the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre, with provisions for starter packs and business support upon completion.

In addition, he approved an overseas postgraduate scholarship for one beneficiary, Abigail Okon Edet, while two graduates already employed in the state civil service are to receive housing support. The governor also instructed that accommodation be provided for beneficiaries transitioning to independent living.

Eno cautioned against the unregulated proliferation of orphanages, emphasising the need for proper standards, while calling on citizens to support vulnerable groups. He expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Oluremi Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former governor Udom Emmanuel, among others, for their goodwill messages.

In her remarks, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, described the governor as a compassionate leader, noting that his policies have continued to improve the welfare and dignity of orphans and vulnerable persons across the state.
