A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ben Agir, has reportedly died following an alleged assault by members of a local vigilante group in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State.
Agir, who was serving in Gombe State and was said to be close to completing his service year, had returned to his hometown for a brief visit when the incident occurred.
Sources said the corps member was apprehended late on Sunday night by vigilante operatives who suspected him of involvement in motorcycle theft. He was allegedly beaten without being given the opportunity to properly identify himself or explain his presence.
The assault reportedly continued until he lost consciousness. He was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Buruku Local Government Council, Raymond Aondoakura, described the development as unfortunate and avoidable. He said the attack took place between 11 p.m. and midnight at Mbajor settlement, near the local government secretariat.
According to the chairman, although the victim attempted to identify himself, one of the vigilante leaders allegedly dismissed his claim, prompting others to join in the assault until he lapsed into a coma.
Aondoakura disclosed that all those involved have been arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution. Authorities have also confirmed that the deceased was a serving NYSC member.
In response, the council has suspended all vigilante activities in the area, stating that stricter regulations will be introduced before such groups are allowed to resume operations.
