Anambra Court Remands Couple Over Child Abuse

The Anambra State Police Command has secured the remand of a couple accused of brutally abusing a 10-year-old boy whose condition sparked outrage after a disturbing video surfaced on social media.
The suspects, identified as Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40, and his wife, Chisom Chukwuyere, 30, were remanded in a correctional centre following their arraignment in court over the alleged abuse of the child, Chiziterem, who was under their care in Awada, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The victim was seen in a viral video with severe burns and injuries across his body, allegedly inflicted by his guardians. The footage triggered widespread condemnation and prompted swift intervention by the Anambra State Government and security agencies.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the suspects were arraigned after preliminary investigations into the case were concluded.
“The suspects were arraigned in court following the conclusion of preliminary investigations into the case, which attracted public concern after reports and video footage of the victim surfaced on social media,” Ikenga said.
He commended residents of the community for providing timely information that led to the rescue of the child and the arrest of the suspects.
“The Anambra State Police Command commends the residents of the area for their vigilance, cooperation and timely provision of information that led to the rescue of the child and ensured that he received the necessary medical attention, while the suspects were apprehended,” he added.
According to the police, the child is currently receiving medical treatment under state protection, while authorities continue efforts to ensure justice is served.
Ikenga reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and upholding human rights in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.
Meanwhile, Anambra State First Lady, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has expressed satisfaction with the victim’s recovery after paying a second visit to him at the hospital.
She described the boy’s steady improvement as a reflection of the dedication of medical personnel and the support, prayers and goodwill shown by concerned members of the public.
Mrs Soludo said she was encouraged by reports from doctors that the child’s condition had stabilised and commended the healthcare team for their efforts in his treatment and recovery.
