The Zamfara State Government has officially launched a comprehensive Measles and Rubella vaccination campaign targeting children aged 9 months to 15 years, aimed at reducing childhood illnesses and deaths caused by vaccine-preventable diseases.

The campaign was flagged off by Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal during a special event marking World Immunization Week in Gusau, the state capital. The initiative was organized by the Office of the First Lady of Zamfara State.

In his address, Governor Lawal described the campaign as a critical component of his administration’s emergency response to improve the healthcare sector. He stressed the importance of immunization in safeguarding children’s lives and building a healthier Zamfara.

> “Measles and Rubella are highly contagious diseases that can cause severe complications, including deafness, blindness, heart defects, brain damage, and death. Thankfully, the Measles-Rubella vaccine offers safe and effective protection,” the Governor said.

He called on parents, caregivers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, and community influencers to actively support the campaign and help achieve full coverage across the state.

Full implementation of the vaccination campaign is scheduled for October 2025.

Speaking at the event, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, the First Lady of Zamfara State, appealed to all stakeholders to join in raising awareness about the importance of the vaccine.

She reaffirmed her commitment to achieving 95% immunization coverage for Zamfara’s children, adding that the Measles and Rubella vaccines are both safe and essential for preventing life-threatening diseases in young children.

> “This vaccine has saved countless lives globally, and it’s delivered through a simple, proven, and safe injection. We must fight misinformation and ensure every child in Zamfara is protected,” she stated.

The First Lady also commended the Centre for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS), led by Dr. Kabir Mustapha, alongside the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) for their crucial support in making the initiative possible.

Health Experts Highlight the Importance of the Campaign

In his remarks, Dr. Kabir Mustapha, Northwest Coordinator for C-WINS, underscored the significance of expanding the existing immunization program to include Rubella alongside Measles.

> “Rubella, though often underestimated, carries serious risks — especially for pregnant women, leading to congenital defects such as heart problems, blindness, deafness, and spinal abnormalities in newborns. This dual vaccination approach is a life-saving mission, not just a health program,” Dr. Mustapha said.

He emphasized the goal of vaccinating every eligible child in Zamfara and achieving at least 95% coverage during the October campaign rollout.

Health professionals present at the event echoed the call for total community support, noting that collective participation is vital for the campaign’s success.

Cultural Performances Promote Immunization Awareness

The launch event also featured cultural dances and drama performances, creatively highlighting the importance of Measles and Rubella vaccination in protecting the health of children and preventing avoidable deat.
