As Muslims across Nigeria mark the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called on journalists in the Federal Capital Territory to uphold ethical reporting, strengthen national unity and continue defending press freedom.
In a Sallah goodwill message issued on behalf of the Council’s Executive Committee, Ike said the values associated with Eid-el-Kabir — sacrifice, obedience and truthfulness — should guide journalists in carrying out their professional responsibilities.
She urged media practitioners to prioritise accuracy and patriotism in their work, describing the media as a critical force for national cohesion at a time when the country faces significant challenges.
“Our nation stands at a critical juncture where the media must act as a healing balm. We must pursue truth with a deep sense of patriotism, ensuring our reports build up the nation rather than tearing it apart,” she said.
The NUJ FCT chairperson warned against sensational reporting, misinformation and divisive narratives, stressing that objectivity, balance and factual accuracy remain the foundation of responsible journalism.
She also encouraged journalists to use their platforms to bridge ethnic and religious differences, promote mutual understanding and support peaceful coexistence across the country.
Reaffirming the importance of a free and independent press in a democratic society, Ike said journalists must remain courageous in holding public officials accountable despite challenges and intimidation.
“The sacrifices made by journalists in the FCT, often under challenging conditions, to keep the public informed are deeply appreciated,” she stated.
“But as we demand freedom to do our jobs without fear or favor, we must also match that freedom with a high sense of professional responsibility.”
Ike further assured members that the NUJ FCT Council would continue to prioritise journalists’ welfare, defend them against violations of their rights and promote an enabling environment for investigative journalism.
She also called for greater unity among journalists, urging media professionals to work together in advancing the profession and strengthening public trust in the media.
The NUJ chairperson concluded by wishing Muslim journalists and their families a peaceful and blessed Eid-el-Kabir celebration, while encouraging them to extend support to the less privileged in keeping with the spirit of the festival.
