Kwara Police Intercept Cannabis Hidden Under Yam Tubers, Arrest Suspects

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, commended the collaborative effort and warned that Kwara will not be a safe haven for criminals.

Operatives of the Kwara State Police Command, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS), and local vigilante groups, have intercepted a vehicle loaded with 127 bags of suspected cannabis sativa concealed beneath tubers of yam.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, described the operation as a “significant breakthrough in the fight against crime and illicit drug trafficking.”

The joint security team carried out the operation on September 26, 2025, at about 4:00 p.m. along the Babanla–Oreke–Oke-Ode axis. Two suspects, Dan-Teni Haruna and Rabiu Ibrahim, both from Saliku, Magama Local Government Area of Niger State, were arrested in connection with the drug haul.

In a related crackdown, operatives also apprehended:

  • Mohammed Abubakar

  • Hussain (surname withheld)

  • Tukur Ibrahim, described as a notorious kidnapper

The trio was allegedly involved in the August 8, 2025 invasion of Babanla community.

Police said the suspects are currently undergoing discreet investigation and will be arraigned in court upon conclusion.
