Matchday 20 of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) delivered thrilling results, with Remo Stars emerging as the biggest winners of the weekend.

The Ikenne-based side secured a crucial 2-1 victory over struggling Akwa United in Uyo, extending their lead at the top of the table to five points with 42 points. Their advantage grew as closest rivals Rivers United fell 2-1 to Plateau United in Jos.

Enugu Rangers, however, had a weekend to forget, losing 2-1 at home to Niger Tornadoes. Rangers’ head coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, described the performance as “shambolic” and issued an apology to fans, vowing to correct their errors in upcoming games.

He cited the absence of veteran striker Godwin Obaje as a significant factor, especially after a crucial penalty miss. The club also expressed frustration over a disallowed goal they deemed legitimate, further compounding their woes.

In a bid to strengthen the squad, Rangers announced the signing of defensive midfielder Mgbemena Ikechukwu from Heartland FC on a three-year deal.

Despite his lack of goals or assists this season, the Flying Antelopes expressed optimism about his contribution as they prepare to face El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri midweek.

Elsewhere, Kwara United added to Enyimba’s struggles with a commanding 2-0 win in a rescheduled Day 16 fixture in Ilorin. Goals from Wasiu Alalale and Junior Aimufua sealed the victory, marking Enyimba’s third consecutive defeat, including losses to Zamalek SC and Kano Pillars.

Despite replacing Yemi Olanrewaju with veteran coach Stanley Eguma, the nine-time NPFL champions continue to face a concerning dip in form.

Other Day 20 Results:
– Sunshine Stars 4-3 Ikorodu City
– Nasarawa United 1-0 Katsina United
– Heartland FC 1-0 Lobi Stars
– Abia Warriors 1-0 Bayelsa United
