Tackling the pressing issues of youth unemployment and underemployment in West Africa will take center stage as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) hosts a major Youth Conference from April 29 to 30, 2025, in Accra, Ghana. Organized in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Youth and Development, the event forms part of the activities marking ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary celebrations.

The two-day conference will provide a dynamic platform for over 250 participants — including government officials, educators, business leaders, development partners, and youth representatives — to engage in strategic discussions on employment, innovation, and civic participation. H.E. Damtien TCHINTCHIBIDJA, Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission, will headline the event alongside key stakeholders from across the region.

Spotlight on Solutions and Innovation

Key topics on the agenda include the root causes of youth unemployment, the socio-political implications of youth marginalization, and the instrumentalization of young people in fragile environments. The conference will also showcase successful youth-led enterprises and initiatives, offering practical examples of resilience and innovation across West Africa.

A major highlight will be the exploration of funding and investment opportunities, including the ECOWAS Human Capital Development (HCD) Catalytic Investment Fund initiative, designed to support youth-focused enterprises and skills development programs in the region.

Embracing Technology and Education Reform

With technology rapidly transforming labor markets, the conference will examine the role of digital solutions in creating job opportunities and addressing employment challenges. Delegates will advocate for reforms to align educational systems with labor market demands, spotlighting effective continuing education and vocational training programs that equip young people with market-ready skills.

Promoting Civic Participation and Active Citizenship

Beyond employment, the conference will encourage greater youth involvement in civic affairs and decision-making processes, promoting active citizenship as a pillar of sustainable development and regional stability.

A Pan-West African Gathering

Participants will include young leaders from ECOWAS member states, representatives from specialized ECOWAS bodies such as the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Program, observers from the ECOWAS Early Warning System, private sector leaders, and strategic international partners.

This landmark gathering underscores ECOWAS’ commitment to empowering youth as drivers of economic growth, innovation, and social cohesion across West Africa.
