The West African Health Organisation (WAHO) has officially announced the 26th Assembly of Health Ministers (AHM) of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), set to take place from May 4 to 10, 2025, in Praia, Cabo Verde.

This year’s Assembly, held under the theme “Regional Community Health Policy Based on Consensus Standards and Principles,” will address some of the most pressing health challenges facing the region. The event will feature in-depth discussions on keyh sub-themes, including:

The impact of recent United States policy decisions on West African health systems.

Regional strategies for bulk procurement of medicines and essential health commodities.

Progress on vaccine development against Lassa fever.

Strengthening WAHO’s partnerships and cooperation with international health stakeholders.

The week-long series ofh high-level meetings will convene health ministers, policy experts, and development partners from across ECOWAS Member States. The official programme includes:

ECOWAS Assembly of Health Ministers: May 9–10, 2025

The annual Assembly remains a critical platform for fostering regional collaboration, policy harmonisation, and experience sharing, as well as adopting collective strategies to strengthen healthcare systems across West Africa.

Founded in 1987, WAHO serves as the technical health arm of ECOWAS and has been instrumental in promoting regional integration, harmonising health policies, and coordinating collective health responses in West Africa. Over the years, WAHO has played a pivotal role in improving healthcare delivery, disease control, and health system resilience throughout the region.

As West Africa continues to navigate complex health challenges, the 26th Assembly of Health Ministers is expected to deliver significant resolutions aimed at building a more integrated, equitable, and accessible regional health system.
