The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the death of Ambassador Stephen Ojo Ogidan, a distinguished career diplomat and Director of the Ministry’s West African Affairs Division (WAAD). He passed away in Abuja on Saturday, September 27, 2025, after a brief illness.
In an official statement signed by Ministry Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Ambassador Ogidan was described as “a gentleman officer and a true patriot whose wisdom, dedication and patriotism were an inspiration to all who had the privilege to work with him.”
Over 30 Years of Diplomatic Service
Ambassador Ogidan dedicated more than three decades to Nigeria’s foreign service, beginning his career under the now-defunct Ministry of Cooperation and Integration in Africa, which merged with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2007.
His death, the Ministry noted, leaves a deep void both within the ministry and across the West African diplomatic community.
“His passing therefore leaves a void that will be deeply felt, not only within the walls of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but across the diplomatic community,” Ebienfa said.
Champion of West African Affairs
As Director of the West African Affairs Division, Ambassador Ogidan was instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy in West Africa, driving regional dialogue, addressing transnational challenges, and promoting cooperation across ECOWAS member states.
He held several critical international diplomatic postings, including at Nigeria’s Consulate-General in Buea, Cameroon, and the Embassy in Lome, Togo.
In recognition of his outstanding service, Ogidan was conferred the prestigious Ambassador-insitu title by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021.
A Legacy of Excellence and Integrity
Renowned for his strategic intellect, calm demeanour, and unwavering dedication, Ambassador Ogidan was considered a pillar of Nigeria’s diplomatic establishment.
The Ministry extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and the Government and people of Edo State, from where he hailed. The Ministry also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
