President Bola Tinubu has revoked the earlier presidential pardon granted to Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello. Her death sentence has now been reduced to a 12-year prison term.
The development was disclosed in an updated official gazette released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the document, Sanda had already spent six years and eight months in custody at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre in Niger State.
With the revised sentence, she is expected to serve about five years and four months more before completing her term.
The decision to adjust her sentence was reportedly made on compassionate grounds.
The updated gazette also lists more than 80 other inmates whose sentences had been similarly reduced.
