The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Friday, January 31, 2025, as the first day of Sha’aban 1446AH in the Islamic calendar.

The announcement was made by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council Sokoto, in an official statement.

According to Prof. Junaidu, the National Moon Sighting Committee, in collaboration with other regional moon sighting teams across Nigeria, did not receive any confirmed reports of the new moon sighting on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, which was the 29th of Rajab 1446AH. As a result, Thursday, January 30, 2025, was designated as the final day of Rajab 1446AH, making Friday the official start of Sha’aban.

The moon sighting committee emphasized that the monthly observation of the crescent moon plays a crucial role in determining the Islamic calendar, ensuring accuracy in marking significant religious events. This process is particularly important in preparing for the upcoming Ramadan, as it enhances confidence in the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon for the commencement of fasting.

The Sultanate urged Muslims across Nigeria to take note of the new month and prepare for the spiritual significance of Sha’aban, which serves as a preparatory period for the holy month of Ramadan.
