The President of the Congress of African Journalists (CAJ), Chris Isiguzo, has called on Muslims across the African continent to use the occasion of Eid El Fitr as a time for reflection, renewal, and rejoicing. In a statement, Isiguzo extended warm greetings to Muslim journalists, acknowledging their dedication and perseverance in balancing their faith with their professional responsibilities.
Isiguzo emphasized the significance of Eid El Fitr, describing it as more than just the end of a month of fasting and prayer but also as a celebration of strength, discipline, and devotion. He noted that the commitment displayed by Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan serves as an inspiration to people of all faiths. “Your commitment to your religious duties, despite the challenges of our modern world, stands as an inspiration to all,” he said.
The CAJ President, who is also a former national President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, highlighted the indispensable role of journalists in society. He praised their contributions in shaping narratives, amplifying the voices of the marginalized, and upholding the truth. “As journalists, you are at the forefront of shaping narratives and offering a voice to the voiceless. Your role in both challenging and joyous times is invaluable,” he added.
Isiguzo encouraged Muslim journalists to take this period of Eid to reflect on shared values of humanity, compassion, and unity. He underscored the importance of journalism in promoting social cohesion and fostering mutual understanding among different communities. “The stories we tell and the truths we uncover are part of our service to society and our greater responsibility to humanity,” he noted.
Beyond the celebrations, Isiguzo urged journalists to remain steadfast in their mission to uphold the ethics of their profession, ensuring that they report with accuracy, fairness, and integrity. He reminded them that their work has a lasting impact on public perception and societal progress. “Let us remember that our words carry weight. They can either unite or divide, educate or mislead. We must always strive to be a force for good,” he stressed.
He also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of fostering peace and unity across Africa, encouraging journalists to use their platforms to bridge divides and promote harmony. He emphasized that the media has the power to counter misinformation and foster understanding among diverse communities. “May this Eid inspire you to continue working towards a future where peace, unity, and understanding prevail across our great continent,” he said.
Isiguzo further noted that the challenges facing African journalists, including press freedom restrictions and economic hardships, should not deter them from their noble duties. Instead, he urged them to draw strength from the resilience shown during Ramadan and continue advocating for truth and justice. “Journalism is a pillar of democracy and social progress. Your unwavering commitment to the truth is essential in building a better Africa,” he remarked.
He called on media organizations and governments to support journalists in their work by ensuring that they operate in an environment free from threats, intimidation, and undue influence. “A free and independent press is vital for the growth and stability of any society. We must work together to protect and uphold these freedoms,” he said.
Finally, Isiguzo extended his heartfelt prayers and well-wishes to all Muslims, particularly journalists, across Africa. “May Allah accept your prayers, reward your sacrifices, and grant you health, happiness, and success in all your endeavors,” he concluded, urging everyone to embrace the spirit of Eid in fostering kindness and unity in their communities.
