The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of seven journalists in a tragic road accident along the Billiri–Kaltungo road in Gombe State.

Among the victims are two members of the NAWOJ, Gombe State Chapter. The journalists were reportedly returning from the wedding ceremony of a colleague, a staff member of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), when their vehicle was involved in the fatal crash.

In addition to the fatalities, four other journalists sustained serious injuries in the accident, including one NAWOJ member, and are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.

Reacting to the tragedy, the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, described the incident as a painful loss to the journalism profession and the nation at large.

“This is a devastating blow to the journalism community. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleagues, including two dedicated members of NAWOJ,” Ibrahim said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families at this very difficult time. We also pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.”

She added that NAWOJ stands in solidarity with the bereaved families, colleagues, and the entire media fraternity in Gombe State and across Nigeria.

The association called on well-meaning Nigerians to join in praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and the quick recovery of the injured journalists, noting that the tragedy has left an indelible mark on the media community.
