President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe as the Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). The appointment, which is for an initial four-year term, took effect on March 11, 2025, according to a statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
Dr. Oloriegbe, a former senator representing Kwara Central in the 9th Senate, brings extensive experience in health policy and medical practice to the role. He holds a Master’s degree in Coaching and Consultation from the University of Oxford, UK, and HEC, Paris, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
An active member of multiple professional organizations, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the International AIDS Society (IAS), Dr. Oloriegbe has a strong background in healthcare leadership. He previously served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health (2019–2023) and led the Joint National Assembly Committee on Health, playing a key role in legislative efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s health sector.
His appointment signals the administration’s commitment to improving the NHIA and expanding healthcare access through robust insurance reforms.
