The Federal Government has concluded arrangements for the evacuation of Nigerian nationals affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, with the first batch of returnees scheduled to arrive in Nigeria on Thursday morning.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the initial group of evacuees will depart the Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday night aboard an Air Peace Airlines flight. The aircraft is expected to land at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at about 5:00 a.m. on Thursday.
The ministry stated that the evacuation exercise is being fully funded by the Federal Government, ensuring that all affected Nigerians are repatriated at no cost to them.
It further reassured the public that comprehensive reception arrangements have been put in place through relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to support the returnees upon arrival.
Officials disclosed that the evacuees will undergo documentation and profiling procedures before receiving necessary assistance and support services. The measures are aimed at facilitating their reintegration and eventual reunion with their families.
The government reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad and pledged to continue monitoring developments in South Africa while providing the necessary support to affected nationals.
The evacuation follows growing concerns over xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, prompting Nigerian authorities to take urgent steps to ensure the safe return of citizens willing to leave the country.
