The National Economic Council (NEC) has endorsed the Revised National Social Protection Policy, 2026–2030, and approved the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across the country.
The Council also urged state governments to align their social protection policies and implementation plans with the revised national framework.
The resolutions were reached at the 160th meeting of the Council, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Shettima urged members of the Council to sustain ongoing economic reforms until their impact translates into more jobs and improved living conditions for Nigerians.
Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, said the rehabilitation of the 13 police training institutions would be completed within three weeks.
He said the exercise was aimed at putting the institutions in good condition ahead of the commencement of training programmes by the Nigeria Police Force.
The Revised National Social Protection Policy, 2026–2030, was presented to the Council by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu.
The Council subsequently directed states to align their social protection policies and implementation plans with the revised national framework.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy also briefed the Council on the state of the Nigerian economy.
He said the economy had stabilised, citing positive developments in key economic indicators.
The Minister also announced that Nigeria had been reclassified as an investment destination.
However, he said the Council identified geopolitical conflicts and pre-election withdrawals as potential challenges to the economy.
According to him, the Council recommended measures to address the anticipated challenges and sustain the country’s current economic gains.
