Edo Governor Vows Justice as 14 Arrested Over Uromi Killings

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has assured that the perpetrators of the recent Uromi killings will face justice, as 14 suspects arrested in connection with the tragic incident are set to be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation.

Governor Okpebholo made this known during a condolence visit to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, at his Maitama residence in Abuja. The visit comes in the wake of the gruesome murder of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The victims, who were hunters from Kano State, were reportedly intercepted, attacked, and killed by a mob while traveling for Sallah celebrations.

During the visit, the governor extended his sympathies to the Deputy Senate President and the victims’ families, vowing that his administration would do everything within its power to bring those responsible to book. He also pledged government support for the affected families.

“It is unfortunate that such a tragic incident happened in our state,” Okpebholo stated. “We are here to express our deep sorrow and to reassure you and the people of Kano State that justice will be served. The President is taking this issue very seriously. The Inspector General of Police has already taken action, and the Deputy Inspector General of Criminal Investigation Department (DIG CID) is handling the case. Fourteen suspects have been arrested, and they will be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation. Additionally, we have set up a committee to support the families of the victims.”

In response, Senator Jibrin commended the governor for his swift action and emphasized the importance of bringing the perpetrators to justice to prevent future occurrences.

“We cannot undo what has happened, but what Nigerians expect is justice,” Jibrin said. “I appreciate the steps you have taken, and I urge you to see this case through to the end. Such barbaric acts must not be repeated, and justice must be served to serve as a deterrent.”

The Deputy Senate President also acknowledged the longstanding peaceful coexistence between different ethnic groups in Edo State and expressed confidence that such an incident would not happen again under the current administration.

Governor Okpebholo is expected to meet with Kano State Governor to further discuss support measures for the victims’ families and reinforce inter-state cooperation on security.

The Edo State government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring peace and justice, assuring Nigerians that every effort is being made to prevent similar incidents in the future.
