The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Zambia following the passing of former Zambian President, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu. The late leader died on June 5, 2025, at the age of 68.
In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a distinguished African statesman who played a pivotal role in Zambia’s political and economic advancement. President Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth president from 2015 to 2021, during which he championed major national development initiatives and regional diplomacy efforts.
“President Lungu steered Zambia through important milestones in infrastructure development, national unity, and economic diversification,” the statement read. “His unwavering commitment to the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ left a lasting imprint on the country’s political and social landscape.”
Notably, President Lungu’s tenure was marked by historic achievements, including the appointment of Zambia’s first female president and several reforms aimed at promoting inclusivity and gender equality.
The Nigerian government also lauded the late president’s contributions to strengthening Africa’s collective voice on the global stage and his enduring dedication to regional solidarity.
“Nigeria stands in solidarity with the Lungu family, the Patriotic Front, and the people of Zambia during this period of national mourning,” the statement added.
As nations across Africa and the world pay tribute, Nigeria joins the international community in honoring Edgar Lungu’s life, leadership, and enduring legacy.
“May his gentle soul rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
