President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna in honour of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, describing the former military leader as a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The president said the decision was aimed at recognising Yar’Adua’s contributions to national development and preserving his legacy for future generations.
“In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna,” Mr Tinubu said.
Under the new arrangement, the institution will be known as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.
Mr Tinubu described Yar’Adua as one of the architects of modern democratic Nigeria whose vision of national partnership and commitment to nation-building helped shape the country’s political evolution.
According to the president, the move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen specialised education in Nigeria’s petroleum and solid minerals sectors while honouring national figures who played significant roles in the country’s history.
He said the revitalisation of the institution would enhance training and research in geological sciences and engineering technology, sectors considered critical to Nigeria’s economic growth and resource development.
The president added that linking educational advancement with the legacy of respected national leaders reflects the government’s commitment to promoting leadership values, national history and academic excellence.
General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures and is widely credited with supporting the country’s transition towards democratic governance.
