Argentina booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 3-1 victory over Switzerland in an entertaining quarter-final played on Saturday.

The South Americans produced another clinical attacking display to end Switzerland’s impressive tournament run and set up a mouth-watering last-four clash against England.

Argentina started brightly and took control of possession from the opening whistle, piling pressure on the Swiss defence with their quick passing and movement in the final third.

Their dominance paid off midway through the first half when Julián Álvarez opened the scoring with a composed finish after being played through by an incisive pass from Lionel Messi.

Switzerland responded positively and gradually found their rhythm, creating several promising chances. Their persistence was rewarded shortly before half-time when Breel Embolo finished from close range after a well-worked move to restore parity and send both teams into the break level at 1-1.

The second half saw Argentina raise the tempo once again. The reigning South American champions regained the lead in the 63rd minute through Enzo Fernández, whose powerful strike from outside the penalty area beat Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Switzerland pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but Argentina remained dangerous on the counterattack. Their victory was sealed late in the game when Lautaro Martínez calmly converted after another swift attacking move, making it 3-1 and ending any hopes of a Swiss comeback.

Messi, although not on the scoresheet, played a pivotal role throughout the contest, dictating play in midfield and creating several opportunities for his teammates with his vision and precise passing.

Argentina defended resolutely in the closing stages to preserve their two-goal advantage and secure a deserved place in the semi-finals, where they will meet England in one of the tournament’s biggest fixtures.

For Switzerland, the defeat marked the end of a commendable World Cup campaign, having reached the quarter-finals after eliminating Colombia in the Round of 16.

Argentina, meanwhile, remain firmly on course for another World Cup title, with their blend of experience and youthful talent continuing to impress as the tournament enters its decisive stage.
