Utah Governor Spencer Cox has confirmed the arrest of a 22-year-old man in connection with the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, praising the suspect’s family for helping bring him into custody.
Governor Cox identified the suspect as Tyler Robinson, who he said was handed over to authorities after confessing to family members.
“We got him,” Cox told reporters. “A family member helped bring him into custody, and together with a friend, they ensured that he was handed over. I want to thank his family for doing the right thing.”
Confession and Evidence
Law enforcement sources revealed that Robinson confessed to his father before being turned in. He is not a student at Utah Valley University but is from southwest Utah. According to investigators, his relatives reported that he had shown signs of increasing radicalisation in recent years and openly expressed dislike for Kirk.
Authorities also disclosed that spent bullet casings recovered from the scene bore disturbing inscriptions. One casing reportedly read: “Hey fascist! Catch!”
A mugshot of Robinson has since been released by police.
Swift Investigation
Governor Cox credited Robinson’s family for their cooperation, saying their courage played a key role in the quick resolution of the case.
“His family did the right thing. They showed courage at a difficult time,” Cox said.
FBI Director Kash Patel praised the speed of the investigation, describing it as “historic progress in 33 hours.” He said the breakthrough underscored the importance of coordination between federal, state, and local law enforcement.
Officials also released a detailed timeline of the investigation, showing how Robinson was identified and arrested just over a day after Kirk’s killing.
