In a major political realignment, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the nation’s ruling party.

Governor Mbah made the declaration during a state-wide broadcast, describing the move as a “bold choice” made in the interest of the people of Enugu and in alignment with Nigeria’s central government.

“There comes always a time when everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny. Today, after long reflection, we have made a decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress,” Mbah said.

Why Mbah Joined APC

Governor Mbah said the defection is strategic, aimed at connecting Enugu State more directly with the federal government to unlock development opportunities and strengthen intergovernmental collaboration.

He emphasized that the shift was not a betrayal of the PDP but a pragmatic step to deliver more effectively on his administration’s goals.

“To the Peoples Democratic Party which provided us the platform on which we campaigned and won, I extend deep gratitude… Leadership demands difficult, even painful decisions, in the service of higher principles and goals,” he added.

Mass Movement of Political Stakeholders

Mbah did not make the move alone — he was joined by several key political figures in Enugu State, including:

  • Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly
  • Local government chairmen
  • Councillors
  • Other elected and appointed officials

This signals a significant shift in the political landscape of Enugu State, long considered a PDP stronghold.

Praises for Tinubu’s Leadership

Governor Mbah also used the broadcast to commend President Bola Tinubu, saying Enugu State has benefited from the President’s policies and support, particularly in areas of infrastructure, security, and economic development.

“We have enjoyed massive support under President Tinubu’s administration. Joining the APC allows us to deepen that collaboration and attract more for our people,” he stated.

Reactions and Implications

The defection is expected to have major political implications in the South-East, a region traditionally aligned with opposition parties. Mbah’s move could:

  • Reshape regional alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections
  • Strengthen APC’s influence in the South-East
  • Spark further defections or realignments within the PDP

So far, the PDP leadership has not officially reacted, though sources within the party have hinted at emergency meetings being planned in response to the defection.
