The Ghanaian Contingent of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG GHANCOY 9) has launched a four-day blood donation drive at Essau Government Hospital to support patients in urgent need of transfusions.
The exercise, which runs from September 15 to 18, 2025, is part of the contingent’s ongoing Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) programme aimed at strengthening ties with local communities.
Captain Albert Kwarteng Adjei, Medical Officer of GHANCOY 9, said the initiative was designed to save lives and ease pressure on local hospitals.
“Blood donation is a lifeline in medical emergencies. From surgeries to trauma care and chronic illnesses, this effort will go a long way in saving lives. We are proud to stand with the people of The Gambia,” he said.
Hospital officials welcomed the gesture, stressing the urgent need for safe blood supply in the region.
“This initiative comes at a crucial time. The donated blood will not only serve Essau Government Hospital but also other facilities across the region,” said one senior health worker.
The blood drive is expected to benefit patients requiring transfusions due to cancer treatments, accidents, or other life-threatening conditions.
The ECOMIG mission, made up of troops from across West Africa, has continued to use humanitarian and social initiatives as part of its stabilisation efforts in The Gambia.
