The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) says more than 6,000 startups across the region have expressed interest in the second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards, with 60 innovative businesses to be selected for the programme.
The ECOWAS Commission said the initiative is designed to strengthen the regional innovation ecosystem, improve access to finance and markets, and help startups scale their businesses and create jobs.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Acting Director of Private Sector and Industry at the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Peter Oluwole, said the programme would go beyond recognising successful entrepreneurs by providing practical support to participating startups.
“It’s not just about winning. It is about giving the resources to run your business, and to go forward with your business,” he said.
Mr. Oluwole said the 60 selected startups would receive training in business management, startup clinics and capacity building before 20 finalists emerge for the final competition. The three top winners will receive seed capital of $30,000, $20,000 and $15,000 respectively.
The awards will focus on sectors including fintech, health technology, agritech and food systems, education technology and skills development, clean technology, climate and green innovation, tourism, hospitality and travel technology. Mr. Oluwole said the programme would particularly encourage the participation of women, young entrepreneurs and persons with disabilities.
He said the initiative would also connect startups with venture capitalists, impact investors, financial institutions and development partners, while promoting cross-border partnerships and access to the wider African Continental Free Trade Area market.
Director-General of the Pan-African Alliance for Small and Medium Industries, Dr Henry Emejuo, described the awards as an important instrument for regional economic integration. He said the programme would help build the capacity of startups while supporting ECOWAS’ broader objective of strengthening economic cooperation among member states.
The competition is expected to run from 21 to 30 September 2026, with a virtual masterclass forming the first phase, followed by pitching and the final award activities. ECOWAS said independent assessors would screen the applications and select the 60 startups that will participate in the programme.
