The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has called on media practitioners to prioritise credibility, ethical standards and public interest journalism as essential pillars for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking at the Emporium Leadership Lecture and Award 2026 held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Emporium Reporters and Emporium Magazine, Ike praised the organisation for sustaining quality journalism over the past decade despite the challenges facing the media industry.
She described the establishment and survival of the media platform as an act of faith in journalism, the Nigerian people and the enduring value of truth. According to her, reaching the 10-year milestone reflects resilience, vision and commitment to professional journalism in an era marked by economic pressures and editorial challenges.
Addressing the theme, “From Clicks to Credibility: Digital Media’s Role in Deepening Nigeria’s Democracy,” Ike warned against the growing trend of prioritising speed over accuracy in news reporting. She noted that while digital technology has expanded access to information, it has also increased the spread of misinformation and unverified content.
The NUJ FCT chairman stressed that credibility remains the foundation of journalism and democracy, adding that public trust in the media depends on adherence to ethical standards and factual reporting. She said the union would continue to support media organisations that uphold professionalism, press freedom and accountability.
Ike also called on governments, corporate organisations and civil society groups to support credible media institutions through partnerships, advertising and funding for investigative journalism. She argued that a vibrant and independent media ecosystem is critical to democratic development and good governance.
Congratulating award recipients and young journalists, she urged them to view recognition as a responsibility to pursue excellence and integrity. She further encouraged emerging media professionals to build their reputations through consistent adherence to truth and ethical reporting.
The NUJ FCT Council chairman congratulated Emporium Reporters and Emporium Magazine on their 10th anniversary, expressing confidence that the organisation would continue to play a significant role in promoting responsible journalism and democratic values in Nigeria.
