The National Youth Service Corps has expressed grief over the death of a serving corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, who was killed during a military operation at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, Abuja, as the scheme called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement posted on its official X handle, the NYSC said Jamiu was serving at Government Junior Secondary School, Bakin Ado, in Nasarawa State before his death.

The scheme described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the deceased’s family, noting that the late corps member had been contributing to national development through his primary assignment.

“The management of the National Youth Service Corps expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Corps Member Abdulsamad Jamiu,” the statement read.

The NYSC said it was engaging relevant security agencies to establish the facts surrounding the operation that led to his death.

“The NYSC management notes this incident with profound concern and sorrow. The scheme is actively engaging with relevant security agencies to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” it stated.

Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and protection of corps members nationwide, the scheme said it would continue to strengthen collaboration with security and intelligence agencies to mitigate risks.

“While this occurrence is deeply regrettable, the scheme reaffirms its commitment to the safety, security and welfare of all corps members and staff across the country,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Guards Brigade Headquarters of the Nigerian Army said the deceased was caught in crossfire during an exchange with suspected armed robbers.

In a statement signed by the Brigade spokesperson, Odunola Olawuyi, troops were said to have responded to a distress call over an armed robbery in the area before coming under attack from fleeing suspects.

“Upon arrival, the troops came under gunfire from the fleeing armed robbers, resulting in a brief but intense exchange. In the course of the engagement, Mr Jamiu was caught in the crossfire,” Olawuyi said.

The Army described the incident as unfortunate, saying troops moved to secure the neighbourhood and protect residents, but the corps member later succumbed to injuries sustained during the operation.

It also disclosed that a military delegation had visited Jamiu’s family to offer condolences and inspect the scene.

However, the deceased’s family has disputed the Army’s explanation, insisting available physical evidence contradicts claims that Jamiu died in crossfire during a gun battle.

His father reportedly rejected the military’s account, raising questions over the circumstances of the killing and intensifying calls for a transparent investigation.

The incident has sparked concern over civilian safety during security operations, with stakeholders urging authorities to establish accountability and prevent similar tragedies.
