A disturbing video circulating online has triggered widespread outrage after showing a restrained suspect being shot by a police officer in Delta State.
In the clip, which lasts less than two minutes, the male suspect is seen seated on the ground with his hands tied behind his back, repeatedly pleading for his life. Speaking in Pidgin English, he claimed he had been deceived by a friend in Sapele and offered to lead officers to the individual.
“Officers, abeg, I go tell you everything. Na my friend deceive me, I go carry you go the place,” he said.
Despite his pleas, an officer dressed in plain clothes is seen cocking his rifle and firing at close range. The suspect immediately slumped as onlookers watched. His body was later placed in a Toyota Sienna vehicle belonging to the Nigeria Police Force, Effurun Area Command.
Authorities have since identified the victim as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi. Police spokesperson Bright Edafe confirmed that the fatal shot was fired by ASP Nuhu Usman, who has been arrested.
According to the police, Ogidi was earlier apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel allegedly containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Edafe stated that the officer’s actions violated Force Order 237 and standard operational procedures. Usman has been transferred to the state headquarters in Asaba and subsequently to Abuja, where he will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for possible sanctions and prosecution.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured that justice would be pursued.
