The Edo State Police Command says it has arrested a 36-year-old suspect and recovered 36 rounds of live cartridges during a routine stop-and-search operation in Benin City.
The operation, carried out this month at Guobadia Junction along the Benin–Auchi Road, led to the interception of a mini bus conveying seven passengers towards Ring Road, Benin City.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Eno Ikoedem, said officers attached to the Ikpoba Hill Area Command became suspicious after some passengers attempted to flee.
“During the search, three male passengers suddenly abandoned their belongings and attempted to run away,” she said.
According to her, officers gave chase and arrested one suspect identified as Richard Gabriel, aged 36, from Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State.
“A search of his bag led to the recovery of 36 rounds of live cartridges concealed inside,” ASP Ikoedem added.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, commended the officers for what he described as their “vigilance and professionalism” during the operation.
He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across Edo State.
