The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which restrained the party from conducting its National Convention, describing the decision as an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.
In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, the opposition party expresses strong disapproval of the judgment delivered by Justice Kolawole Omotosho, insisting that the ruling will not derail its preparations to elect new National Officers who will lead the party for the next four years.
“This judgment does not in any way vitiate our ability to proceed with the necessary processes and activities leading to the National Convention,” the statement read.
The PDP referenced a recent Supreme Court judgment affirming the supremacy of political partiesin managing their internal affairs, arguing that the Federal High Court’s decision contradicts established legal principles and the constitutional rights of political associations in Nigeria.
According to the statement, the ruling undermines the principle of separation of powers and the autonomy of political organizations to conduct their internal elections without undue interference.
The PDP called on its members, state chapters, and party organs nationwide to remain calm, steadfast, and focused on ongoing preparations for the convention.
“We urge all members and stakeholders to stay committed to the unity and progress of our great party as we work towards the successful conduct of the National Convention,” the party stated.
Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and democratic principles, the PDP disclosed that it has directed its legal team to immediately appeal the judgment of the Federal High Court.
“As a law-abiding party, we have instructed our lawyers to take all necessary legal steps to protect the integrity of our democratic processes,” the statement concluded.
The PDP assured its supporters that it remains focused on internal reforms and preparations aimed at strengthening the party ahead of future elections.
