In a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, prominent opposition leaders have converged at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja to formalize a coalition aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The high-profile gathering includes the 2023 presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, respectively. Also in attendance are former governors Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), and Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), as well as ex-Senate President David Mark.

The coalition has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its official political platform, signaling a unified front to challenge APC dominance in 2027. As part of the restructuring, David Mark, who recently resigned from the PDP, has been appointed interim national chairman of the ADC, with Rauf Aregbesola serving as interim national secretary.

Other notable figures present include Senator Dino Melaye, former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung, media mogul Dele Momodu, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Labour Party’s Senator Ireti Kingibe, former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, and former Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (rtd.).

Representatives from PDP, LP, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and other opposition factions also joined the closed-door session, further solidifying the emerging alliance.

The coalition’s central objective is to consolidate political strength across party lines and present a formidable alternative to the APC in the 2027 elections.

More details from the high-level meeting are expected to emerge.
