The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has forecasted high-intensity rainfall between May and June 2025, warning of potential flash floods in coastal cities. This was disclosed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the annual climate prediction presentation in Abuja.

According to the forecast, the onset of rainfall will be delayed in northern and central states, including Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara. Meanwhile, early rainfall is expected in parts of the southern states, such as Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, and sections of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi. Other regions are projected to experience a normal onset of rainfall.

The report also predicts that certain areas, including Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, the FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo, will see an early end to the rainy season. Conversely, a delayed end of rainfall is expected in parts of Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu.

Additionally, NIMET projects above-average temperatures across the country, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures being higher than usual in January, February, March, and May. However, April is expected to bring cooler-than-normal temperatures, except for the northern states, where warmer-than-average conditions are likely.

Minister Keyamo urged farmers and individuals involved in rain-fed agriculture to consult the Seasonal Climate Change document or reach out to NIMET for detailed guidance on expected weather patterns.
