AGLA Demands Urgent Probe into Killing of 16 Northerners in Edo State

The Arewa Grassroots Leaders Assembly (AGLA) has urged the Federal Government and security agencies to launch an urgent investigation into the killing of 16 Northern Nigerians in Uromi, Edo State.

Hon. Onogu Collins Monday, the National President of AGLA, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, describing it as a grave violation of human rights and a challenge to national unity. He strongly condemned the killings and called on law enforcement agencies to ensure a swift, transparent, and impartial probe to bring the perpetrators to justice.

AGLA emphasized that the attack, which occurred during the holy month of Ramadan, not only violates religious and fundamental rights but also undermines the collective peace and coexistence of Nigerians. The group stressed that ensuring justice for the victims is a fundamental duty of the government.

“We call on the authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible for these heinous crimes. Beyond that, concrete steps must be taken to prevent future occurrences and address the underlying causes of violence in our society,” Onogu stated.

He further urged the government to implement a robust security framework that guarantees the safety of all Nigerians, irrespective of their regional or ethnic backgrounds. The organization also recommended the establishment of an independent panel to oversee the investigation and ensure accountability.

AGLA called on civil society organizations and international human rights bodies to monitor the case closely and offer support to the victims’ families. Additionally, Onogu urged leaders across regional, political, and religious lines to resist any attempts to exploit the incident for divisive purposes, stressing the need for unity and peaceful coexistence.

The group also advocated for increased investment in intelligence gathering, community policing, and early warning systems to preempt violent attacks. Strengthening inter-community engagement, trust-building initiatives, and preventive measures should be prioritized to avert future crises.

In a final appeal, AGLA urged the media to exercise responsible reporting on the matter, avoiding sensationalism that could fuel tensions. Journalists were encouraged to focus on facts and narratives that promote peace and national reconciliation.

Hon. Onogu reassured the bereaved families of AGLA’s commitment to seeking justice and called on the Federal Government to provide support, including compensation and trauma counseling, to those affected.
