EU-Nigeria Talks to Focus on Trade, Security, Climate Action, and Human Development

The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the European Union (EU) are set to convene a high-level Senior Officials Meeting from Tuesday, July 1 to Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in Abuja, as part of preparations for an upcoming Nigeria–EU Ministerial Dialogue.

According to a statement from the Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, the two-day engagement will focus on expanding areas of mutual cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the EU.

The meeting will be co-chaired by Ambassador Janet Olisa, Director for Regions at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Mathieu Briens, Deputy Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service (EEAS).

Key Areas of Discussion

The agenda will cover a wide spectrum of thematic areas critical to both sides, including:

Multilateral and regional cooperation

Peace, security, and governance

Humanitarian challenges

Trade, investment, and economic development Human capital development, including health, education, and social protection

Science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation, Migration management Energy transition, climate action, and green economy development

Officials say the talks are vital for refining joint strategies ahead of the next Ministerial Meeting and for fostering a sustainable partnership rooted in shared values, mutual interests, and a commitment to a rules-based international order.

The Nigeria-EU partnership has evolved into one of the most significant diplomatic relationships on the African continent, encompassing political, economic, security, and developmental cooperation.
