Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have destroyed two cannabis farms in Edo State as part of a crackdown on drug trafficking, authorities said.
The agency’s state commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the farms were located in Ago Forest in Orhionmwon Local Government Area and had an estimated yield of 1,388.42kg. He added that no suspects were arrested at the site because the cultivators were absent during the raid.
“In a sustained offensive against drug trafficking and abuse, the state command has destroyed two cannabis plantations with a yield of 1,388.42kg,” Ofoyeju said, noting that the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal drug activities.
In separate raids across Benin City and surrounding areas, four suspected drug traffickers — three women and one man — were arrested over the past week.
According to the agency, the suspects were apprehended in locations including Oredo Local Government Secretariat, Oloku and Uhumwonde, with various quantities of cannabis, methamphetamine and tramadol recovered. Ofoyeju said the arrests highlighted the scale of local drug distribution networks.
Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA said it partnered with the Niger Delta Development Commission and the Nigeria Police Force to run a three-day anti-drug sensitisation campaign in secondary schools across Benin City, targeting more than 1,700 students.
