A High Court in Akwa Ibom State has sentenced a mother of four to life imprisonment for the attempted murder of a 12-year-old girl.
The convict was found guilty after the court established that she deliberately carried out actions intended to end the life of the minor, an offence that drew widespread condemnation within the community.
Delivering judgment, the court held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and ruled that the gravity of the crime warranted a life sentence. The judge stressed the need to protect children from abuse and violence, noting that such offences must attract severe punishment to serve as a deterrent.
The victim survived the attack and received medical attention, while investigations and subsequent prosecution led to the conviction of the woman.
Legal observers described the verdict as a significant step in the fight against crimes involving children, emphasizing that the justice system must continue to safeguard vulnerable members of society.
The life sentence means the convict will remain in prison for the duration stipulated by law, bringing an end to a case that has attracted public attention across Akwa Ibom State.
